IMPACT ASSESSMENT OF MINIMIZING UNWANTED CATCHES AND DISCARDING

Objectives:

The general objective will be to examine the effects of more selective fishing and discard reduction on marine ecosystems and industry using mathematical modelling tools. Specific objectives of WP3 are:

O3.1. Linking fisheries technical software that assess the effects of net modifications on fishing gear selectivity (such as FISHSELECT) with existing fisheries bioeconomic modelling software, such as MEFISTO or GADGET to produce a fisheries bioeconomics simulation modelling toolbox that will be used in discussing with industry the technical and economic effects of discards reduction.

O3.2. Estimating the costs and benefits of avoiding unwanted catches: Cost-Benefit Analysis of limiting / reducing discarding on a case by case basis and extrapolating as far as possible to entire national fleets. Estimate the social and economic impacts.

O3.3. Estimating the effects of banning discards on the structure and resilience of marine ecosystems, including the effects on the upper trophic levels (including seabirds) and the effects cascading down the food chain to small fish, using: GADGET, ATLANTIS, EwE-Ecopath with Ecosim, size-spectrum models.

O3.4. The spatial dimension of discards reduction: Maps of high density patches of potential unwanted catch incorporating fishers knowledge and fishing effort. Ecosystem modelling to evaluate area closures. Development of an online tool for mapping in real time unwanted catches.

O3.5. Valuation of ecosystems services in relation to discard reduction O3.6. Developing and calculating indicators of Good Environmental Status and economic profitability
